CHARLES CODMAN Born in Boston, Codman first enlisted in the American Field Service and later switched to American aviation. Flying Breuget Bombers, he was eventually awarded both the Silver Star and The Croix De Guerre. In 1942, Codman re-enlisted in the US Army with the rank of Major and worked as a translator. Later, he would serve as aide-de-camp to General Patton. Codman retired from the Army in 1945 with the rank of Colonel, at which time he returned to Boston and ran a real estate business. |

The latter half of this book is about Codman's experiences as a prisoner of war. Forced down two months before the Armistice, he was captured and interned in a POW camp. At the wars end, Codman, James Norman Hall and two others made their way to the Swiss frontier and freedom.
