Bert Hall

BERT HALL

(1885-1948) Born in Missouri, Weston Berton Hall was working as a Paris taxi driver at the outbreak of war. After serving first in the French Foreign Legion, Hall transferred to aviation and was one of the founding members of the Escadrille Americaine, which later became the Lafayette Escadrille. Considered somewhat of an outsider and a braggart, he was eventually transferred out of the Escadrille and served briefly in an all French unit before being sent to Russia in a technical capacity. When America finally entered the war Hall was transferred to the U.S. Air Service, but failed to report and was listed as a deserter in both services. After the war, Hall was later convicted of bilking the Chinese government out of thousands of dollars of the sale of aircraft.
