(1879-1936)  The son of an American Senator, Mitchell served first as a private in the Spanish-American war.  After gaining his commission he embarked on a long military career that would see him serve in the newly formed U.S. Air Service as a Brigadier General.  Following the war, Mitchell pursued a controversial course of advocating for airpower and was eventually court marshalled.
