The History Of Money And The U.S. Mint
Money has been around for an extremely long time in all kind of forms. But what is Money actually? In ancient times everything would be traded for something equally valuable. Easy concept, give me one of your cows and I'll give you three sheep. But as you can imagine you can't always carry around everything you own, so often enough the situation occurred, that when two people met and desired to trade something only one of them would have something with them that the other actually desired. This problem is what generally sparked the Idea of using rare metals for trade rather than actual hard product. This idea simplified modern trade in a great way and after more time kings and emperors started minting coins which all contained the same amounts of certain metals. This allowed reliable trade between countries and nations.

Enough of the old days. In modern time minting facilities have come a long way and are operated with precision unimaginable in the middle ages. Renowned scientist David Rittenhouse was the first Director of the United States Mint. Most recently Edmund C. Moy held the position until his resignation effective January 9, 2011. The first Superintendent and Chief Coiner was Henry Voigt and is credited with some of the first United States coin designs. Another important position at the Mint is that of Chief Engraver, that was filled by Frank Gasparro, William Barber, Charles E. Barber, James B. Longacre, and Christian Gobrecht and many others.
since the Philadelphia Mint opened in 1792 the Mint has operated several branch facilities throughout the United States. After the opening of branch mints came the need for mint marks, an unique feature on the coin to show where it was created. The first branch mints were the Charlotte,Georgia "1838–1861", North Carolina "1838–1861", Dahlonega, and New Orleans, Louisiana "1838–1909" branches. Both the Charlotte and Dahlonega Mints were opened to create coinage from raw gold, and minted only gold coins. The Civil War closed both these facilities permanently. The New Orleans Mint closed at the beginning of the Civil War 1861 and did not open again until the end of Reconstruction in 1879. During its two stints as a minting factory, it produced both gold and silver coinage.

A new branch opened in Carson City, Nevada 1870 and operated until 1893, with a three-year hiatus from 1886 to 1888. Like the Charlotte and Dahlonega branches, the Carson City Mint was built because large amounts of precious metals could be mined in the direct area.
Another branch of the U.S. mint the "Manila Mint" was established in 1920 in the Philippines, which was a U.S. Colony at the time. Until today, the Manila Mint is the only US mint thatis run outside the Continental U.S.A and was responsible for producing coins only for the colony. This branch was in production from 1920 to 1922, and then again from 1925 through 1941. The Coins struck by this mint bear either the M mark (for Manila) or none at all. This practise is very similar to thatof the mint in Philadelphia at the time.

A branch mint in Dalles, Oregon was commissioned in 1864. Construction was halted in 1870, and even though the building still stands the facility never produced any coins.
